Senior Infants

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It is our last week of school and we are taking it easy with the workload again and revising the things we did.

We would love for you to ask your child what some of their favourite memories of Senior Infants are e.g. Aistear, Christmas Play, Lego workshop, P.E, Art etc. It would be so lovely to draw a picture or write some of those memories and send to us by Friday. As always, we would love to see any work you are proud of!

We have loved being your teachers this year and you have done great work. Remember to play outside and inside and have a well-earned break! Keep practicing your writing, sounds and tricky words at home and you will be super readers!

We hope you and your families have a lovely Summer and we wish you all the best in First Class.

Best Wishes

Mrs. Dixon, Ms. Walsh and Ms. Fitzgibbon

    • When you are reading/listening to the stories, we still want you to keep making connections, but this week we would also like you to focus on making predictions. (The children have done this before). You can look at the title and the front cover and predict what you think think will happen in the story, throughout reading the story you can make predictions about what you think will happen next and you can predict how you think the story will end!

  • Maths Challenge of the week:
How many legs does a dog have?
How many legs does 2 dogs have?
How many legs does 2 dogs and a cat have?

  • Oral Language Game: Make a Feely Bag. Get your Mam or Dad to put lots of different things into a bag (e.g. a shopping bag). You have to reach your hand into the bag, hold onto one thing, and describe how it feels. Is it soft? Is it rough? Is it smooth? Does it have corners? Then you have to guess what you think it could be. Remember no peaking until you've made a guess!! Here are some ideas of things you could put into your Feely Bag.

Monday 18th May

English: Here are the next seven tricky words: could, should, would, more, before, any, many. Remember to use our 'look, cover, say, write' technique like we do for our homework. This helps us to learn our tricky words. Have a go at playing our 'Roll and Read' game! You roll a dice and read the number e.g. 4. Choose one tricky word from row number 4, and put it into a sentence. The first person to roll and read all seven tricky words wins!

Maths: Number 10
We're continuing to work on the number 10 and we have some fun problems for you to solve! Remember the ten-frame you made last week? We're going to use it again today to help us solve these Maths problems! Let's do one together first!

So I am going to put 6 red birds in my ten-frame, and 4 yellow birds. Then I can count how many there are altogether!

That's right, 6 + 4 = 10. There are 10 birds altogether! Now you have a go! Use cheerios/grapes/lego or anything small in your ten-frame!

SPHE: Like we said last week, it's super important to look after our minds as well as our bodies, so why don't you have a go at making a Calm Jar? Looking at one of these and watching the glitter move around can be really relaxing😊. You can find a plastic bottle around your house. Remember to always have an adult with you when you're doing this! Calm Jar Craft Instructions

PE: Dance along with this great song! Zumba Kids - I Like to Move It

Story: We have another special treat for Senior Infants today! Mrs. Dixon has made a video of her reading a lovely story called 'Five Minutes' Peace'. We hope you all enjoy listening to the story and practice making predictions and connections!

Tuesday 19th May

English: Today we will practice two new initial consonant blends: bl and pl. Listen to the first minute of this song (focusing on bl and pl) to learn more about these sounds!
Now have a look at the pictures below. Some start and bl and some start with pl. Go through each picture and say the word. Which words start with bl? Which words start with pl?

Maths: Money
We are going to learn about money and today we are going to look at coins! When do we use coins? We use them when we're buying a bottle of water in the shop, when we're putting a coin in the shopping trolley, when we're buying a t-shirt in Penney's. Remember we don't ever put coins near our mouth!

Ask your child the following questions:

  • What shape is this coin?
  • What colour is this coin?
  • Which coin is the smallest? Which is the biggest?
  • What is the value of this coin? (e.g. 10c, 20c)
  • What is on the front of the coin? What is on the back?
  • Is the edge of this coin smooth or ridged?
Now we are going to do coin rubbings!
  1. Put a coin on the table and put a sheet of paper on top. Make sure to hold the coin and paper in place so it doesn't move!
  2. Use a pencil/sharp crayon and gently rub the tip over the coin until the coin design appears.

SESE: People Who Help US - Doctors, Nurses and Paramedics
Right now schools and lots of shops are still closed, but some people, like front line workers in the emergency services, are still going to work every day to make sure we are all safe and that we stay safe. Today we're going to learn about Doctors, Nurses, Paramedics and the other people who work in hospitals. Read the PowerPoint People Who Help Us - Hospital Staff with your child and ask them the following questions:

  • What clothes does a doctor/nurse etc. usually wear when they're working?
  • How do the doctors, nurses etc. help people? (do x-rays, help women have babies, perform operations etc).
  • Do you think a doctor's/nurse's/paramedic's job is important? Why?
  • How have the doctors, nurses etc. been helping us recently?
  • What is something we can do to show the key workers who work at hospitals that we are grateful for what they are doing? (Make an art picture to stick on the window, clap for them etc).

PE: Let's get moving with Joe Wicks! Joe Wicks 5 Minute Move

Wednesday 20th May

English: It's Writing Wednesday again! This week we are going to be writing stories! Remember, in every story we need a setting, a character, a complication/problem and a solution! Here are four ideas so you can get started on writing your own story!

Remember our narrative writing template? You can use this to help you draw pictures and write your story!

Maths: Number 10
Today we are going back to our ten-frame! We're going to make number stories with three numbers to make 10 altogether, and we're going to use our ten-frame to help us!

Here comes the tricky bit! Can you write the number story? This ten-frame has 3 red circles, 4 green circles and 3 yellow circles, so the number story is 3 + 4 + 3 = 10. Here are some more ten-frames for you to figure out!

Here is the tricky bit! Can you write down the number stories for each ten-frame?

SESE: People Who Help Us - Firefighters
We are still learning about the key workers who are helping to keep us all safe right now. Today we're focusing on Firefighters. Read this PowerPoint People Who Help Us - Firefighters with your child and ask them the following questions:

  • What do firefighters wear when they are working?
  • How do firefighters help people? (Put out fires in buildings, rescue people etc).
  • Do you think a firefighter's job is important? Why?
  • How have the firefighters been helping us recently?

PE: Are you ready to pretend to be a gummy bear in our Gummy Bear Song?

Thursday 21st May

English: Phonics Game - The alien needs to get to the spaceship, and he needs your help! Can you look at the picture and move the letters to spell the words correctly?

Click to play the phonics game Alien Escape

Maths: Money

Remember the coins we looked at on Tuesday? We're going to be using them again today! Which one has the smallest value? Which has the biggest?

Today we're going to add up coins because we need to be able to do this when we go shopping. Can you add the sums below to see which treat you can buy each time?

Now see if you can answer these questions. The last one is a tricky one if you're up for the challenge!
  • What costs the least money?
  • What costs the most money?
  • Which two treats cost the same?
  • Hannah has 10c. She bought an ice-cream. How much change will she get?

SESE: People Who Help Us - The Gardaí
So far we've looked at how people in hospitals and how firefighters are helping to keep us safe right now, and today we're going to focus on the Gardaí are helping us. Read this worksheet with questions on The Gardaí and ask your child the questions below.
  • How to the Gardaí help people?
  • Do you think a Garda's job is important? Why?
  • How have the Gardaí been helping us recently? (Bringing food to the elderly in their homes, checking to make sure people are following the rules and staying at home etc).

Friday 22nd May

English: It's Friday so that means it's time to read another poem! This week's poem is called 'The Snow in Town'. Even though this poem is about snow, it also has lots of examples of our sounds/digraphs/blends and tricky words in it! Read the poem with your child, let them read the words they can.

Can you find the words that have:
  • bl
  • pl
  • br
  • sh
  • ou (ow)
  • Can you find any more?
  • Can you find some tricky words?
  • What did you like about the poem?

Maths: Here are 2 games that you can play to practice what we've learned this week.
The first one is Ordering Numbers (click Up to 20).
The second one is a Toy Shop Money Game (click 1c up to 10c).

Art: As we've been learning all about money this week, why don't you make your very own piggy bank! Watch the video to give you an idea on how to make it. You can use a plastic bottle, a cardboard box, an empty pringles container, toilet paper rolls, stickers, paint, coloured paper, crayons or anything else you can think of to make and decorate your piggy bank!

Here are some more ideas of different piggy banks to get your creative minds thinking!
