Monday 11th May
English: Here are the next 6 Tricky Words: what, when, where, who, why which (They are all question words). Remember to practice 'look, copy, cover, write, check' like we do for our homework. It is a great way to learn how to read/write tricky words. Have a go at playing the fun Tricky Words Passcode game this week. Write the Tricky Words on paper or sticky notes and put them beside doors around your house. Before you go through the door you must high 5 the tricky word and say it.
Maths: Listen to this cool song about the Ten Frame to remind you what it is and how we use it Ten Frame Song
Today we would like you to make a ten frame at home.
1. Draw a Ten Frame on a piece of paper like the picture below
2. Find 10 counters/raisins/lego/cereal (anything small)
3. Call out a number for your child and get them to put that number of 'counters' inside the ten frame. Remember we always start at the top left of the ten frame and fill the top row first!
4. Ask them how many empty spaces are there. For example, if you called out the number 4, there would be 6 empty spaces.
5. Continue to call out different numbers between 0-10.
6. Keep your Ten Frame safe as we will use it again this week!
S.P.H.E: Just like we exercise to keep our bodies healthy, it is also very important to look after our minds. It would be a lovely idea to keep a Happiness Journal this week and write/draw what made you feel happy each day. Here is a Happiness Journal that you could make or print! Happiness Journal
P.E: A little dance to get you moving today!
Story: We have a special treat for Senior Infants today! Ms. Walsh has made a video of her reading a lovely story called 'Best Friends Forever'. We hope you all enjoy listening to the story and practice making connections.
Tuesday 12th May
English: Today we will practice two initial consonant blends: tr and br. Listen to this fun song to help you learn more!
๐ตThey are two letters that work together to help make words begin!
You can call them blends.๐ต
Have a look at the pictures below.
All of the pictures start with br or tr. Go through each picture and say the word. Which pictures start with tr? Which pictures start with br?
Maths: Explain to your child that we are going to talk about Capacity which means how much liquid a container can hold. The two words that we would love for you to use today are full and empty. Show your child some full and empty containers e.g. a full glass of water, an empty bowl, an empty basin, a full bottle of water. Ask if each is full or empty? (emphasize that full means full to the top). Empty out some of the water. Now is it full? No it's nearly full. You could even use your Maths eyes to go on a Capacity Hunt around the house searching for items that are full/empty/nearly full/nearly empty!
S.E.S.E: Last week we were learning all about the farm. Watch the two videos to learn about the Story of Milk and its journey to the shop and our homes!
After watching the videos, can you talk about the 6 pictures and put them in order?
P.E: Try this 5 minute workout with Joe Wicks the Body Coach!
Wednesday 13th May
English: On Wednesdays will will practice our writing! This week, we are going to practice writing Our News. This is great because we can use this week's Tricky Words! ๐We love sharing our news with the class and trying our best to write it!
Don't forget your finger spacing!
 |
Remember our clown? |
What do we need to remember when telling our news?
Maths: Today we are going back to our Ten Frame.
First, listen to the song to get your Maths Brain working!
Now take out the Ten Frame that you made on Monday and your 10 small objects.
We are going to practice the Story of 10 like you heard in the song๐
Look at my Ten Frame.
I have put 7 counters inside.
There are 3 empty spaces.
To make 10, I would need to put 3 more counters in the frame.
I can write this down as 7 + 3 = 10
Now it's your turn!
1. Starting at 0, call out a number for your child
2. Like we did on Monday, get your child to put the number of 'counters' that you call inside the Ten Frame
3. Ask them how many empty spaces are there? How many more 'counters' would we need to put on the Ten Frame to make 10 altogether.
4. Continue to call out all of the numbers from 0-10.
5. Use your Ten Frame to help you write the Story of 10 like the picture above 7 + 3 = 10. There are 11 ways to make 10.
S.E.S.E: It is still Spring time and there are lots of baby chicks being born on farms.
Talk through the different stages in the picture and draw a picture of the Life Cycle of the Chicken like the one below.
P.E: With all this talk about chickens, it must be time for the Chicken Dance with Maximo!
Thursday 14th May
English: You are invited to the Phonics Game Show to go back over the digraphs! ๐
Senior Infants, come on down!
Can you match all of the images with the correct sound?
Maths: Today we are going back to Capacity. Remind your child what capacity means - how much liquid a container can hold. We used the words full and empty to describe the amount of liquid in different containers around the house: bottle, mug, glass, basin, bowl, jug, eggcup, spoon and more! The two words that we would like you to use today are more and less.
How can we find out how much liquid a container can hold?
What could we use?
Look at the different containers in the picture below and answer the questions.
Remember an estimate is a good guess and there is no right or wrong answer!
1. What container could you use to fill a bath? Why?
2. What container could you use to fill a swimming pool? Why?
3. What container would you use to fill an eggcup? Why?
4. Estimate how many eggcups it would take to fill a glass?
5. Estimate how many teaspoons it would take to fill an eggcup?
If you can, do some measuring at home. Pick a container, e.g. an eggcup and see how many you will need to fill up a glass.
Remember to always be with an adult when you are playing/working with water!
S.E.S.E: As we are talking about capacity and working with water, this would be a great time to do some Science and test what objects float or sink. If something floats it stays at the top/surface of the water, if it sinks it goes to the bottom.
What might make it float or sink?
1. The material it is made of (plastic/metal/wood etc.)
2. The shape of the object
3. The weight of the object (how heavy/light it is)
Why not have a go at testing some objects. Get a basin/bowl/container with water, find things around the house and test them. Here are some ideas... Don't worry if you don't have them all, come up with your own!
Remember to always be with an adult when you are playing/working with water!
P.E: Try another movement video with our super teacher Aisling O'Brien.
There is also a Yoga video for parents which you might like to try! ๐
Friday 15th May
English: On Fridays, we will read a poem. This week's poem is 'Imagine' by Roland Egan. Read the poem with your child, let them read the words they can. They are lots of examples of our sounds/digraphs/blends in this poem. For example, snail has the long /a/ sound - ai, whale also has the long /a/ sound - a_e.
Can you find words that have...
- ai (ai/ay/a_e)
- ee (ee/ea/e_e)
- oa (oa/ow/o_e)
- sh
- ch
- Can you find any more?
- What did you like about the poem?
Maths: Here are 2 games that you could play to help practice what we have learned this week - using your ten frame and comparing the capacity of containers.
Capacity Game - You don't need to sign up, just scroll down and click the play button 'Practice Now'.
Art: Have a go at making a pencil holder using toilet paper rolls. Watch the video to give you an idea how to make it. You could use toilet paper rolls, glue, sticky tape, coloured paper, crayons or pencils and anything else you think of. Don't worry if you don't have coloured paper, you can draw your own designs on a blank page!
P.E: Put on your favourite song and play musical statues!
Here is some music with stops if you would all like to join in!
You are finished all of this week's work.
Well Done on a SUPER week! ๐
